Dean’s Message
Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Lagos
Dear Students, it is a privileged to welcome you to the faculty through this medium
The Faculty of Engineering was one of the four new Faculties that were established in October 1964 in University of Lagos after the University officially took off in 1962. The other three Faculties were Arts, Education and Science.
The Engineering Faculty commenced academic activities in the 1964/1965 academic year with three departments, namely Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering programs with a combined enrolment of thirty-eight (38) students. Today, sixty (60) years after that initial take off, the UNILAG Faculty of Engineering has grown through leaps and bounds to become a household name not only nationally but even internationally.
Presently the Faculty consists of nine departments which offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes leading to the award of B.Sc. (Honours) in ten programmes viz:
i) Chemical Engineering
ii) Civil and Environmental Engineering
iii) Petroleum and Gas Engineering
iv) Electrical and Electronics Engineering
vi) Mechanical Engineering
vii) Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
viii) Systems Engineering
ix) Surveying and Geo-informatics
x) Biomedical Engineering.
Computer Engineering is a programme under the Electrical and Electronics Department. The faculty also offers programmes in M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. Degrees. Presently, the Faculty of Engineering has a combined academic staff member of about Two Hundred (200) and supported by a crop of high- level Technicians, Technologist and Engineers who man the various research laboratories and workshops. The students’ population has grown from 38 at inception to about Four Thousand (4,000). Given the nature of Nigeria being a developing country, our graduates are provided with a wider range of high-level general engineering education. At the end of their training, they are well-versed in engineering theory and practice and are capable of taking on full professional responsibilities. The faculty has produced two Vice Chancellors for the University of Lagos. First is Prof. Oyewusi -Obe Ibidapo from 2000 to 2007.
Prof. Rahmon Ade Bello also served as the Vice Chancellor from November 2012 to November 2017.We are poised to give you the skills that you will need to compete with the best in the world. In the era of globalization, critical thinking, teamwork and multidisciplinary emphasis are needed to give the competitive edge. In this prospectus, you will find the information you need to navigate your way into course registrations and data that may be useful for decisions on courses and other relevant issues that may affect your studies. We have added a chapter on Frequently Asked Questions. These are not complete but are a work in progress. On behalf of the faculty of Engineering, I wish you all the best in your professional development to become an engineer that can help Nigeria compete with the rest of the world.
